An archaeological or geophysical GPR survey will identify subsurface archaeological features.

An archaeological or geophysical survey with the use of Ground Penetrating (GPR) radar can identify many archaeological features without the need for intrusive/ destructive excavation methods. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Building foundations
  • Ditches and pits
  • Fortifications
  • Places with burial activity
  • Layer stratigraphy
  • Layout of towns

At KB Surveys, we are experts at archaeological surveys and had our results published in prestigious Archaeological Journals. The geophysical survey we offer will help you see exactly what is hidden below the ground without damaging any, potentially priceless archaeological discoveries.

FAQ

When is an archaeological survey required?

An archaeological survey is required if you are planning a project on a plot of land that holds registered historical importance. It could also be a case where historical features have not yet been identified and these could impact development later. Because of this, it is usually recommended that archaeological surveys are undertaken to eliminate any problems that could arise further down the line. Hidden issues such as drainage problems, subsidence and other features can potentially impact a project and a GPR survey will help in identifying these.

How long does a geophysical survey take?

The time needed to complete a geophysical GPR survey depends on the size of the area being surveyed. It could potentially range from a day to multiple weeks. The quality of equipment is also a factor along with the skill and experience of the surveyor.

What can impact a geophysical survey?

The data for geophysical survey should be collected by an experienced GPR operator. This will guarantee that all the necessary measurements are recorded properly, and that the data is useful for post processing. Except skills and expertise of the GPR surveyors, the quality of data will be impacted by the environment: -the water content and mineral composition of the soil (damp clay soils can create ‘ringing’ effect which will overshadow real targets -the topography of the survey area -the heterogeneity of the environment (clutter obstructing the data, such as tree roots, high concentration of utilities etc.) -the overgrown vegetation (if scanning fields) -in case of burial site surveys; the size, shape and depth of the grave, but also conservation state of remains. A geophysical survey can reach depths of around 4-6 metres in ideal conditions however depths of 1-2 metres are expected for surveys taking place in Britain.

What are other methods of an archaeological survey?

Archaeological survey techniques include: Magnetometry to measure the magnetic field. Resistivity to check electrical resistance. Magnetic susceptibility surveys if the topsoil, plough soil and features it contains have the potential to be magnetised. Metal detection to see if any metal features are hidden underground. A LiDAR analysis targets an object with a laser to measure the time it takes for the reflected light to return to the receiver, to help calculate ranges (variable distances).
