Detecting
unmarked graves has become an urgent matter as, in many areas, cemeteries and
graveyards have become full and the need for the new burial plots has arisen.
Although
cemeteries and crematoriums hold the records of all the burial locations in a
form of a plot maps and logbooks or record journals, quite often they are
inaccurate for the older parts of the graveyards. The inaccuracy of those
records comes from a fact that, up until recently, they were kept in a form of
handwritten notes and maps, which makes them unreliable; also, many of them are
reported lost or damaged. Visual assessment of the cemeteries is not very sound
method either since many graves at historical graveyards have missing
headstones.
