Chimney flue location and mapping survey with use of a GPR technology offers reliable results.

Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for chimney flue location is not only one of the most effective ways of tracing chimney flues inside the walls, it is also cost effective since it will cause no damage to the scanned surface.

Chimney flue survey is typically commissioned when you need to drill into or through the wall and you want to avoid damaging chimney flue. Causing damage to chimney flue can compromise your safety or, in case unused chimney flues in the older buildings, introducing further defects to those that likely already exist.

The way Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) works is straightforward- it sends a signal into the wall and receives back the information which can be either interpreted on site or saved for the office-based interpretation. If the data is collected for the office interpretation, you will receive flue paths mapped on the AutoCAD drawing and a short report.

FAQ

How were chimney flues traced before using GPR technology?

Locating chimney flues before non-destructive GPR surveys were introduced for this purpose, was done by intrusive methods such as drilling and/or removing bricks. In the created gap the borescope or CCTV was inserted so the chimney flue could be traced. This was costly and time consuming. Introduction of GPR for locating chimney flues was welcomed with excitement and is now a method of the first choice for chimney flues location.

Is chimney flue survey and chimney flue location survey the same?

Chimney flue survey and chimney flue location survey are different services. The aim of the chimney flue survey is to examine the condition of the flue and diagnose any problems which might exist. Chimney flue survey will say if you can safely use your fireplace or if it’s unused whether it requires any maintenance works. Chimney flue location survey on the other hand is used for tracing and mapping chimney flues to learn their arrangement inside the wall. This type of survey is especially helpful before drilling or other maintenance jobs on the building.

Do I need to maintain unused chimney flue?

As a company we are responsible for locating chimney flues but that is a question that we often hear from the individual clients. The short answer is yes, the unused still will require some maintenance. Even if a flue is unused, it will still need to be ventilated and should be inspected/ cleaned annually. The fact they you are not using your chimney flue will not prevent potential damage to the masonry (or clay and metal) from severe weather and moisture or on rarer occasions by animal presence.
