Visual inspection survey is used for mapping defects in concrete structures and buildings, as well as retaining walls.
A defect mapping survey (also known as visual inspection or
condition survey) is a comprehensive visual inspection process aimed at
identifying and documenting various types of defects in structures, retaining
walls, and concrete installations. Utilizing advanced inspection tools, our
experts meticulously assess the condition of the structure, identifying issues
such as cracks, spalling, efflorescence, corrosion, and more. The findings of
visual survey are systematically recorded and mapped, providing a clear visual
representation of the defects, their locations, and their severity. This
detailed mapping of defects is crucial for understanding the structural
integrity and prioritizing necessary repairs or maintenance.
The visual inspection survey culminates in a
thorough report that highlights all identified defects. This report serves as a
vital resource for property owners, engineers, and maintenance teams, guiding
them in making informed decisions to ensure the safety, durability, and longevity
of the structure. By conducting a defect mapping survey, you gain valuable
insights into the health of your concrete and masonry installations, enabling
proactive maintenance and preventing costly future damages.
What is a visual inspection or defect mapping survey?
Our experienced surveyors will access your
structure and perform a thorough inspection of its accessible components. We
meticulously review and record all the noteworthy defects which are then summarised
into a defect list.
A visual condition survey only requires a
surveyor to access the structure, there is no measurement equipment or
significant presence required. As a result, this kind of survey is relatively
unobtrusive, whilst it will gather significant information to help guide
further investigations.
Visual inspection and defect mapping surveys
provide additional perspective on a structure which in some cases may not be
practical to survey another way. It is possible to build a complete picture of
the structural health, or alternatively to highlight where additional
information is required from GPR or other non-intrusive investigations, before,
finally, undertaking intrusive investigations if required.
Defect mapping surveys of any structure
Coupled with GPR surveys, we have performed
visual inspection and defect mapping surveys on retaining walls, canal locks,
and sea defences. Surveys have been conducted from both the land side and
sea/water side of the structure.
Some of the types of defects which can be recorded
include spalling, efflorescence, delamination, corrosion, erosion, displacement,
bulging, scaling, staining, joint defects and vegetation growth.
